Measuring sustainability performance of rice cultivation in Thailand using Sustainable Rice Platform indicators

The sustainability level of current rice farming practices in Thailand was assessed based on in-field data from interviewing 2000 farmers covering six varieties and their different production systems. Data were collected farmers’ characteristics activities according to the 41 requirements Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) standard. SRP scores ranged 53 81%, with best performance by Khao Dawk Mali 105 cultivated rainfed, organic key success factors linked formation a farmer group resulting very good farm management, Integrated Pest Management, health safety, water use. proposed 12 indicators (PIs) interconnected are considered appropriate measure monitor progress toward sustainable cultivation for policy makers. PIs governance, affordability living costs, energy-use efficiency, life satisfaction could potentially be added, considering local context relation agriculture goals. successful cases SRP-certified farms benefits implementation should conveyed other induce wider implementation. useful identify areas requiring priority interventions make sustainability.
